Click on heading to open.Powered Two Wheelers, in one form or another, whether as a Motorcycle, Scooter or Moped, have been around since motoring began.
In the 40's and 50's they were the transport of choice for all, but a privaliged few. Although economical, most were relatively slow, unreliable and inefficient.
In the 60's foreign manufacturers led by Japan, saw a gap in the market and introduced a range of small motorcycles, mopeds and step thrus, which were innovative, economical and reliable. They proved so popular that by the late 70's, UK manufacturing, (which was already in decline), had virtually disappeared.
Through the 80's bigger and more powerful machines were introduced and popularity soared. But there was a down side. Without proper instruction, any form of machinery can be dangerous and with little or no instruction, the combination of increased power, speed, and growing popularity, (especially with the young ) saw accident rates soar. Steps were taken, but it was too late. Powered two wheelers were vilified by the press as dangerous and so people (especially parents) turned their back on them, seeking the safety of the car.
Over the next 20 years, legislation was introduced and steps taken to reduce the accident rate. A compulsary helmet law, age, speed and power restrictions, Training by qualified instructors, before going on the road and a comprehensive rider training scheme, to test standard, all helped to drastically reduce the accident rate.
Today Department of Transport road accident figures, show that powered two wheel casualties are now at their lowest level, since records began, in 1926. Making them one of the safest forms of transport, on our roads today.
Whilst all of the above restrictions apply to learner riders, once qualified a whole new world of powered two wheels opens up. From Maxi Scooters to Tourers, Sports Bikes to Enduros, what ever you want, there's always something there, for you to enjoy.
